Hawaiian Vanilla Beans – Planifolia Species

We have partnered with vanilla growing friend over in Hawaii to bring you SOME OF THE BEST beans you will see. Grown proudly on the Hawaiian islands in the United States of America, you will be pleased with the bold, strong fruity aroma of the Hawaiian vanilla beans that brings back notes of a tropical island breeze.

Vanilla planifolia is an orchid. The flower you see on your vanilla yogurt container is a vanilla orchid flower. And those flowers are exquisitely beautiful and magnificently fragrant but compared to other orchids, they lack a little something. Until they have been pollinated, of course.

  • Once the flowers have been pollinated, they become one of the most expensive spices in the world, vanilla. And Hawaii produces this exotic spice as Hawaiian Vanilla Beans
  • Vanilla flowers must be hand-pollinated, or vanilla beans would pretty much disappear from the global market
  • In tropical Mexico, traditionally, vanilla blossoms were naturally pollinated by local Melipona bees
  • While vanilla isn’t an ingredient in many traditional Hawaiian dishes, it is more popular than ever on the islands
  • Hawaiian vanilla beans are the planifolia species, so expect a traditional, familiar vanilla flavor with a wide variety of uses

Outdoors, vanilla grows up to about 25 degrees on each side of the equator. That’s why Hawaii is the only US state where it is viable to cultivate vanilla commercially.
