Details

Specially crafted for vanilla extraction and brewing processes, these oak blocks are ideal for adding additional flavor to your extract or brew. In addition, they will also reduce the alcoholic bite often found in homemade vanilla extract while adding a subtle oak aged flavor.

Our premium oak blocks are ~1 - 2 cm cubes that come in 3 different varieties.

  • American Oak Medium Toast
  • French Oak Medium Toast
  • Hungarian Oak Medium+ Toast

Some folks add their oak blocks at the beginning of the extraction, while other add theirs closer to the end. It's all personal preference, just stay patient and try different things to reach the flavor you're looking for! One recommended technique is outlined below.

When to Add:
After your vanilla extract has been steeping for about 4–6 weeks, add the oak blocks to begin the aging process.

Ratio:
Use approximately 0.5–0.7 oz of oak blocks per quart of extract (about 8–12 small blocks, 1–2 cm each), or 1.8–2.5 oz per gallon. This provides the ideal surface area for a smooth, balanced oak character.

Steeping Time:
Let the oak infuse for 4–8 weeks, tasting every week or two until you reach your preferred flavor. The longer it rests, the richer and rounder the taste becomes — but extended aging beyond 8 weeks may add mild tannins.

When to Remove:
Once your extract tastes smooth and mellow with subtle oak depth, remove the blocks. You can reuse them once for a lighter infusion before discarding. Using the blocks a third time is not recommended.

Flavor Notes:
Light toast oak highlights the natural sweetness of vanilla, while medium or heavy toast introduces deeper caramel, spice, and whiskey-like warmth.

Oak block

I’m excited to see if there will be a chance up in the vanilla flavor as said. I could only use a couple .because of the neck size of my spiced rum bottle that has been extracting the vanilla flavor from the beans for two years now. I plan to start a new batch after the holidays. I will cut the cubes in half to fit the neck of the bottle of rum or vodka which everyone I end up using.
