Flavor Profile: Sun cured with the traditional curing method produces a heavenly vanilla aroma with dark chocolate and coffee hints (many folks also claim to catch a floral whiff) and are very long and plump. These beans are grown in the Sumatra region of Indonesia.

Vanilla beans originated in Mexico and are sun cured for months using the traditional drying method. They are now found all over the world from places like Madagascar to Indonesia to Papa New Guinea farms. The scent consists of a mocha-cacao aroma with a rich, black or dark brown color and an oily outside surface. The interior of the bean is where the magic is at and consists of millions of black, tiny vanilla seeds that are waiting to be scraped out.

Our beans are traditionally cured to develop the full, complex vanilla flavor made of over 200 organic compounds that artificial vanilla (Natural Vanilla Flavor WONF) cannot properly replicate. The entire process takes anywhere from 6 to 9 months after pollination and our farmers in the Sumatran region of Indonesia have turned vanilla processing and curing into a true art. This region remains the industry quality benchmark for producing planifolia vanilla with high vanillin content.

Our grade A vanilla beans are ~5 - 7 inches in length and are handpicked to ensure proper qualities. There are so many recipes that can be created with these magical beans! They are perfect for making homemade vanilla extract or KAHLUA, home cooking or baking, desserts such as vanilla bean ice cream, cake, cupcakes, or cookies and are a top choice of professional chefs for making desserts such as Creme Brulee. Our beans are also a top pick for home brewers or those who own a brewery or cidery! Homemade KAHLUA or Vanilla extract is also a very popular gift and can be made using a simple vodka infusion method! Bonus points for using the spent vanilla beans after the extract making process for creating vanilla sugar!

You can also follow these instructions to learn how to open, split, and scrape a whole vanilla bean!

Our beans are triple inspected throughout the journey from Sumatra to the United States. First, they are inspected by our farmers who have hundreds of years of wisdom and experience growing these gourmet pods.  The second inspection is before bulk vacuum sealing for transport and to ensure no mold has developed. The final inspection is done at our warehouse moments before packing your shipment. We check the smell, quality, and appearance if any mold has developed a final time. Once all of these are checked, we vacuum seal our vanilla beans in our beautiful custom industrial vacuum pouch to a tight 28 HG vacuum.

My favorite for extract

When I first started making vanilla extract, I tested a few different varieties of beans, and the Sumatra beans are my favorite. The beans and extract smell the best, better than some much more expensive beans I got somewhere else. These beans extracted in bourbon make some delicious ice cream (put in a little more than the recipe calls for).

I have batches of extract made with VBK's Sumatra beans going in both vodka and bourbon, using 4 oz of beans for a 750 ml bottle, minus some alcohol for displacement (I extract in whatever bottle the alcohol comes in, as long as it's glass).

These beans are lovely and plump and they made the pantry smell amazing, a perfect vanilla scent (the food vanilla smell, not the candle vanilla smell), for a few days before I opened the package and started the extract. The Madagascar beans from VBK (also good quality) never had that strong of a fragrance, although you can smell those through the package, too. I weighed my beans before making my extract and the scale said that my order weighed exactly what it should.

Shipping was fast, and I mean VERY fast. My order was packaged and shipped maybe an hour after I placed the order, and was in my mailbox in 2 days.

Smells amazing after only a week!

I am using the Sumatra beans to make a vanilla extract for Christmas. I have them resting in Jefferson's Ocean Bourbon. I cut and jarred them last week and opened them today to top off the Bourbon and they already smell heavenly! I cannot wait to try the vanilla extract!

These are Beautiful!

My wife immediately made a new batch of vanilla extract with them, and she called them “beautiful “ as she prepared them.
We’re looking forward to trying them in a few months… Thank you!
